How I Choose Which Mosaic Concept to Make Next

How I Choose Which Mosaic Concept to Make Next

People often ask, “How do you choose which mosaic to make next?”

I have an archive full of concepts—sketches, ideas, things I’ve already designed.

Each one means something to me, so technically they’re all ready.

But sometimes, one just calls louder than the rest.

When a Design Won’t Leave Me Alone

Sometimes a concept just wants to come out.

It’s the one I can’t stop thinking about. I’ll be sitting at the table, or walking around the garden, and my mind will keep drifting back to that design.

The other day, my partner and I went tile shopping, and I found this new colour I hadn’t seen before.

It wasn’t in the plan. I wasn’t looking for it. But it caught me—and for the next two days, I obsessed over what I could use it for.

So I did exactly that. I started the piece that matched the feeling.

Following the Spark

All my concepts mean something—that’s why they’re in my archive in the first place.

But when I choose which one to make next, it usually comes down to:

Which design feels alive right now?

Which one keeps tugging at me?

Is there a material or colour I’ve just found that suddenly unlocks the next piece?

It’s not about sticking to a strict schedule—it’s about following the creative spark.

The Real Problem? Starting Too Many at Once

Starting isn’t my problem.

Stopping myself from starting ALL of them at once is the hard part.

When you’re someone who loves ideas, sometimes it’s difficult to pick just one and focus. But I’ve learned to listen to what feels right in the moment.

Final Thoughts: Trust the Pull

I don’t overthink it.

If a design keeps whispering at me, or if a new material inspires me to reimagine an old idea, I follow that energy.

That’s how the next mosaic gets chosen—it chooses me just as much as I choose it.
