What It Feels Like to Grout a Memory

What It Feels Like to Grout a Memory

Some mosaics are just art.

Others are memories you cement into place—literally.

When I grout pieces that hold personal stories, like the mosaic of my cat Tori, it’s not just about finishing the work.

It’s about preserving something important.

Leaving Their Mark

There’s something powerful about knowing that when I press grout into the spaces between the tiles, I’m not just sealing glass and ceramic—I’m sealing a moment in time.

For Tori, it’s her mark on the wall.

She’s physically gone, but she’s still here with us, not just in our hearts but as part of the house itself, woven into the art I’ve made.

Why It Matters

Every design I make has its own story.

Some are lighthearted, some are inspired by animals in my life, and some, like Tori’s mosaic, are deep and personal.

When I grout those pieces, I’m not just completing a project—I’m committing the memory to permanence.

It’s an act of love and reflection.

It’s poetically beautiful, really.

Cementing Memories Into Art

Grouting is a messy process. It fills the cracks, smooths the edges, and holds the whole thing together.

That’s exactly what memories do, too. They’re what fill in the gaps between life’s moments, shaping who we are.

By grouting these designs, I’m literally and metaphorically cementing the memory into my work.

And every time I see those mosaics, I smile—for different reasons, for different stories.

Final Thoughts: Memory Is Part of the Process

Mosaicing isn’t just about colour and pattern—it’s about making something meaningful last.

Grouting a memory feels like an act of closure, of love, and of celebration all at once.

It’s not just sealing art—it’s keeping someone or something with you forever.
