My Favourite Tools: What I Use and Why

My Favourite Tools: What I Use and Why

Mosaicing is about patience, creativity, and having the right tools for the job.

Over the years, I’ve tested plenty of materials and techniques, but some tools have become my go-to favourites—the ones I reach for every time because they make the process smoother, easier, and more enjoyable.

Favourite Nippers: Compound Tile Nippers

If you’ve ever struggled with standard nippers—especially if you have arthritic hands or wrist pain—compound nippers are a game-changer.

They work like standard tile nippers but with extra leverage. That means:

Less pressure needed

Smoother, more controlled cuts

Reduced hand fatigue

I use them for almost all of my cutting, especially when working with my shard method where small, detailed cuts are key.

Favourite Adhesive: Bondcrete

When it comes to glue, I’m loyal to Bondcrete.

Here’s why:

Dries clear, so no worries about cloudy residue

Easy clean-up, even if you get a bit messy

Pre-mixed and ready to go, saving time and effort

Comes with a lid for storage, so no waste between projects

Strong bond once cured, perfect for both indoor and outdoor mosaics

Plus, it has a nice workable texture, especially when you let it thicken a little before use. It behaves like a suction cup when applied correctly—ideal for vertical mosaics where you don’t want pieces sliding down the wall.

Favourite Grout: Davco

I’m not overly fussy when it comes to grout, but I often find myself reaching for Davco.

It’s reliable, widely available, and works well for the majority of my pieces.

Whether I’m using plain grout or mixing in acrylic pigments and glitter for a custom look, Davco has been my default choice for consistency and ease.

Final Thoughts: Use What Feels Good

The truth is, the best tools are the ones that work for you.

For me, these tools aren’t just about quality—they’re about comfort, ease, and letting me focus on the art instead of the struggle.

If you’re starting out or looking to make your process easier, I hope my favourites help guide you.
